Teacher Housing

Support Teacher Housing at Nyakabaare Primary School to Improve Education in Rwampara County

For the past six years, Africa Strong has worked to uplift Rwemiyenje Primary School in Uganda’s Rwampara District, achieving remarkable success in reducing teacher absenteeism from 40% to 5% by improving teacher housing. Inspired by these results, we now aim to expand this initiative and address a district-wide need for better teacher accommodations, starting with Nyakabaare Primary School.

Currently, five teachers at Nyakabaare live in a deteriorating, overcrowded structure with only two bedrooms and a sitting area. The building lacks basic infrastructure like solid floors, ceilings, and walls. While these teachers benefit from living close to the school, their accommodations are far from adequate, and nine other teachers must travel 5 kilometers each day, facing harsh weather and road conditions. This distance often leads to high absenteeism, leaving many students without a teacher.

To address this critical need, we are seeking to raise $15,000 to build new teacher housing at Nyakabaare Primary School. This new building will provide safe, functional housing for teachers, ensuring they are consistently present for the 381 students (160 boys and 221 girls) enrolled at the school. With separate living quarters for male and female teachers, the new structure, combined with the existing one, will accommodate 11 of the school’s 14 teachers.

Investing in teacher housing is more than just providing shelter—it directly impacts the quality of education. When teachers live on-site, absenteeism drops, and students benefit from consistent instruction. Better housing also fosters a more motivated, stable teaching staff, which in turn improves student performance and strengthens the entire community.

This project is just the beginning. As we complete housing for Nyakabaare, we will continue working toward improving teacher housing at Kitwe and Rwemiyenje Primary Schools. Africa Strong’s vision is not only to address immediate needs but also to create self-sustaining systems within schools that empower communities, promote long-term growth, and support sustainable development.

Your donation will help us provide better housing for teachers, leading to improved educational outcomes and brighter futures for the children of Nyakabaare Primary School. Together, we can create lasting change.
